Tensor Reactor Vessel Head Stud Tensioner
Tensor AB has designed, produced, and serviced hydraulic tensioning systems world-wide since 1978. Curtiss-Wright Nuclear has extensive experience with Reactor Vessel Head Stud tensioning and is partnered with Tensor to provide sales and technical support for their tensioning equipment. Together, Curtiss-Wright and Tensor bring renowned expertise in developing, manufacturing, testing, installing, and supporting hydraulic tensioning systems to meet the critical design and safety criteria for the nuclear industry.
The Tensor reactor vessel head stud tensioning equipment consists of hydraulic stud tensioners, an electric pump, a manifold, and a control console. Proper tensioning ensures a leak-tight seal under high pressure and temperature of the reactor vessel, while de-tensioning allows for safe removal of the head during refueling operations.
- Thread-On Tensioner
- The tensioner is seated on the flange over the stud & nut.
- The counter balance is activated to easily lower the puller bar down onto the stud.
- The puller bar is turned on to the stud with the airdrive.
- Operate the hydraulic pump to apply the correct hydraulic pressure.
- The nut is tightened (or loosened) with the nut turning mechanism.
- Hydraulic pressure is released, and the spring package immediately starts returning the hydraulic fluid back to the pump unit.
- The counter balance helps the puller bar turn off the stud with the airdrive.
- The tensioner is now ready to be moved to the next stud.
- Clamping Tensioner
- The tensioner is seated on the flange over the stud & nut.
- The tensioner clamping mechanism is engaged then manually locked onto the stud.
- Operate the hydraulic pump to apply the correct hydraulic pressure.
- The nut is tightened (or loosened) with the nut turning mechanism.
- Hydraulic pressure is released, and the spring package immediately starts returning the hydraulic fluid back to the pump unit.
- The tensioner is unlocked and unclamped (disengaged) from the stud.
- The tensioner is now ready to be moved to the next stud.
- Compact design reduces tensioner weight
- Easy handling method promotes worker safety
- Reduced equipment set-up/removal time
- Less weight added to the carousel/polar crane
- Reliable, less-complex design is easy to maintain with minimal tooling
- Fail-safe design with built-in redundancies/different operation modes
- Floating piston accommodates flange rotation and stud misalignment
- Flexible pump/console positioning in low dose area
- Counterbalance device boosts safe and quick positioning
- Flexible bolt tensioning system with 3 to 8 bolt tensioners
- Designed to suit PWR and BWR plants

Tensor Mutli-Stud Tensioner (TMT)
Designed specifically for critical applications, Tensor Multi-Stud Tensioners simultaneously de-tension and tension multiple studs, optimizing operational efficiency and safety. The Hydraulic hoses are located away from the operator to safeguard the working conditions.
- The tool has an integrated stud elongation measurement system.
- If needed, each tensioner can be operated separately.
- Customized to the user’s application
- Simultaneous tensioning/de-tensioning all studs in the flange
- Quick mounting on the flange due to the light weight and modular design
- Time efficient assembly, tensioning or de-tensioning and disassembly
Tensor Single Stud Tensioners
Tensor Single Stud Bolt Tensioners are custom engineered for high-precision applications. The single stud tensioners can deliver precision in even the most demanding applications.
- Place tensioner over nut and stud
- Turn the puller sleeve down
- Pressurize the system to apply tension
- Turn the nut as needed (up or down)
- Release hydraulic pressure
- The piston will automatically reset by retracting via spring action
- Load capacity: Up to 2.7 million lbs of force
- Sizes: 1-3/16” (M30) to 7” (M180) diameter
- Operating Pressure: Up to 21,750 psi (1,500 bar)
- Compatibility: Can be used with round or hex nuts
- Compatibility
- Compact design
- Ease of Operation
- Automatically returns the hydraulic liquid immediately when pressure is released
- Integrated nut rotator
Vertically Operated Tensor Multi-Stud Tensioner
Designed specifically for vertical flanges in tight spaces. Hydraulic hoses are located away from the operator to safeguard the working conditions.
- The tool has an integrated stud elongation measurement system
- If needed, each tensioner can be operated separately
- Customized to the user’s application
- Simultaneous tensioning/de-tensioning of all studs in the flange
- Quick mounting on the flange due to the light weight and modular design
- Time efficient assembly, tensioning or de-tensioning and disassembly
Tensor Multi-Stud Tensioner-6 (TMT-6) for Upper Unit Nozzles
Designed specifically for critical applications, the TMT-6 simultaneously de-tension and tension 6 studs, optimizing operational efficiency and safety.
- The Tensor Multi-Stud Tensioner combines gripping mechanisms for the stud and nut, which allows the studs and nuts to rotate simultaneously or independently
- The tool has an integrated stud elongation measurement system.
- Each stud can be operated separately
- Each tensioner can be operated individually
- Customized to the user’s application
- Simultaneous tensioning/de-tensioning all studs in the flange
- Operated remotely from the flange and thereby significantly reduces dose for the operator
